Haiti update 5: VBS

Haiti Partners,

This is Sarah teaching a lesson about
how we are children our King.
They made crowns to illustrate!

Yesterday, we started out at 8am setting up for vbs. At 9am we welcomed the kids in the church with music and blowing bubbles! Amber and I (plus translator Shnyder) led 5 small groups in a lesson from 2 Corinthians 5:4-7 about how we are like jars of clay who God can use to keep his treasure, namely, himself. We decorated some small jars with funny faces for the craft.

Afterward the team played games with the kids. During games I prepared with some of the  translators to share the gospel. I used the “three circles” gospel presentation that starts at creation, then describes sin, brokenness, the gospel, our response, and finally handed the mic off to the local pastor. I was asked to do this because kids will often tell missionaries what they want to hear. Instead, we are having the pastor do the closing so he can reiterate the gospel clearly and elicit more sincere commitments to Christ. The pastor ended up not giving an "altar call" because he thought the kids were very young. Instead, he walked through the 3 circles again and challenged them to believe in Jesus. Here is a video of the gospel presentation.

Today, we had a similar schedule, but at the end of VBS, the ministry we are partnered with purchased rice and beans for all the families of VBS kids (about 100 total). We assembled the bags before vbs (click here for the time lapse). Later, we gave out the bags to the kids. Here is a time lapse of that, and also some pictures of kids from that afternoon.

This was published far past our return but please continue to pray for the the gospel seeds to take root and grow in the fertile soil of Haitian hearts.

Thank you for your partnership!

Bronson Simmons

The Church's Ongoing Pandemic

Photo Credit  People don’t go to church for a lot of reasons, but a Christian without a church is a Christian in trouble. Sadly, the number of professing Christians is far larger than the number who attend weekly meetings. Many churches experienced an acceleration of this trend during Covid as well: professing Christians have returned to school, work, and leisure, but have not returned for regular church gatherings. Why? Everyone is a unique case in the specifics, but there are trends we see in the wake of the pandemic: people have elevated political and medical (mask & vaccine) opinions over faith commitments and demoted their faith so it is not the primary identity marker in their life. What does this mean for the church? Is it doomed? I don’t think so, but Christians need to rediscover that the church can have different political and medical opinions, but still love each other, be on mission, and gather for Jesus. Christians need to remember that the fact that Jesus died o...

Haiti Trip - Overview

Amber and I are going to Haiti on July 1 st -7 th with 7 other members of Ballardsville Baptist Church (and 1 from another local church).  The trip is led by Brent Gambrell, the President of A Door to Hope Ministries. He has an ongoing ministry presence in Haiti, which takes short-term missionaries to areas of strategic outreach. We will be going to a village called Calebasse (Cal-eh-bass). We know we will be in Calebasse for prayer walking, sharing the gospel, and doing home repair. We don’t know exactly what else we will help with yet, because it could change before July! The possibilities include the building/repair of a church, helping with a pastor’s conference, VBS, or orphanage repair. Much of the work focuses on recovery and repair from the disasters Haiti experienced in 2010 (7.0 earthquake) and 2016 (Hurricane Matthew). ( See this later blog  - we received  news of more trip specifics ) Would you partner with us in praying for our tr...

June 2020: "Hurry up & Wait"

Family and Friends, This pace of this last month has been "hurry up and wait" because we are just waiting for Wren to come! Our bags are packed and she could decide to come anytime, even as I write this. Here are a few things we have been doing in the meantime: Slushies & Park Walks This picture of My Love is called "mid-bite scowl at unexpected photo" Baby Prep My office is now merely a desk in Wren's room. It's still a mess (because of me), so no pictures for now. (should I be cleaning right now?🤔🤷🏻 )Any tips on where to store a mountain of diapers? I like this persons idea:  Good News Homes A handful of youth had a great service project with Good News Homes. They painted, cleaned, pulled weeds, and mulched like CHAMPS! Somehow I managed to get into poison ivy and chiggers on my right leg. It was gross, but three weeks and a two doctor visits later I can wear pants and refrain from groaning about my itchy leg.  Julia in a...
