February 2019


New/Exciting
February was full of guests after church and friends staying overnight while coming through town. Our good friend Patrick stopped in on his way to Virginia. He came along with us to a service project and movie time with the youth. Afterward, John Adams came over to visit and it was a sweet reminder of a friend group from time past!


We hosted other wonderful guests on a Sunday afternoons including Cade, Fedner, and the Skeens family!

For Church, I scouted out our March retreat with some youth. We met Bjorn, a monstrous, fluffy, and  friendly pupper at the campgrounds.

As a teacher of young children, Amber comes home with the best quotes. Some of them become inside jokes for us around the house. One we often laugh at is "I didn't have an accident!...I...I just got a little pee in my underwear." I'm pretty sure this is a good sermon illustration, I just haven't figured out exactly how.

Prayer

Please pray for Amber's Parent-teacher meetings. They are finishing up only days after I write this, but they have a lasting impact on students and teachers!

Please pray for Bronson's Hebrew studies. It is a labor of love (emphasis on labor).

Recommended book:  

 I don't have time for a proper book review, but this was a noteworthy book. It was written by a Christian Senator from Nebraska, Ben Sasse. He shows a couple key areas our society is fragmenting and aching because of rapid social and technological shifts. Afterwards, Sasse proposes how we can strengthen both our families and communities. His solutions challenge readers to strategically love one's family and neighbor in the face of these new social shifts. Don't get me wrong, this is a political book. His solutions are from the ground-up though, planning a stronger future for America with a country of people loving their neighbors. My review doesn't do it justice. It will challenge you to be a better Christian (presumably), spouse, parent, neighbor, and citizen. Check it out.

Photo Credit  People don’t go to church for a lot of reasons, but a Christian without a church is a Christian in trouble. Sadly, the number of professing Christians is far larger than the number who attend weekly meetings. Many churches experienced an acceleration of this trend during Covid as well: professing Christians have returned to school, work, and leisure, but have not returned for regular church gatherings. Why? Everyone is a unique case in the specifics, but there are trends we see in the wake of the pandemic: people have elevated political and medical (mask & vaccine) opinions over faith commitments and demoted their faith so it is not the primary identity marker in their life. What does this mean for the church? Is it doomed? September 2019: Netflix is how much?

Family and Friends, here is an overview of September! New Early September we got to lead some youth on a local service project to help Good News Homes. I failed to take many good pictures, but here is a glimpse: Cleaning up trimmed bushes Also, My parents came in town to visit us. We had a great time with them at Bernheim Forest and downtown Louisville. We walked the park, ate out, and talked/prayed with a homeless gentleman downtown Louisville. (shortly after he showed us this camera) It was a joy to see family and it made us anticipate more time like this during the holidays! Also, my dad has a favorite "Youtuber" that films in Louisville. I usually only hear youth at church talk about their favorite "Youtubers," so that was funny. Sorry we didn't have time to visit him, Dad! I preached a sermon on the conception and birth of Jesus, so I showed clip of me on my 1st birthday as an illustration. The youth thought it was fun and it worked

May 2019, A Time of Transition

New & Exciting This May was the end of my 3rd year in Seminary! I am thankful the Lord has brought us this far, providing moment after moment of grace to get through classes, assignments, and finals for 6 semesters. I want to thank my Amber first for her continual support and care for me when I am discouraged, consumed, or exhausted because of seminary. She usually suffers most when I struggle through seasons. She is my best friend, wife, and chief supporter. She rocks. Amber finished her second year of teaching in May! She will not be returning full time next year, but she will do summer tutoring and continue in a part time role, Lord willing. She is relieved to be finished and is quite enjoying the break from the intense end-of-school schedule. With her free time she is picking up the hobbies of bar crawling and ax throwing. (Kidding!) Here is a picture of us at the church leadership appreciation dinner. (I was dressed up as from the 80's...or at least attempting to)
